This go-around for the key comic spotlight focuses on a relatively new critically acclaimed Image Comic series called Lazarus. This Eisner award winning team of writer Greg Rucka and artist Michael Lark is about a dystopian future society, where a handful of powerful families rule the Waste, the future of America. The story starts with the main female protagonist, Forever Carlyle’s death. Her death is short lived, turns out she is technologically enhanced, and is more tech than natural, like a Terminator. She is the specialized solider and enforcer for the family.
Greg Rucka’s writing is very powerful, and he is known for writing strong characters, and this creator-owned series gives him a chance to really shine. Throw in some political intrigue, and fascinating situations, all the ingredients for a great story.
Michael Lark’s artwork compliments Mr. Rucka’s story with a very believable realistic style. Together both of them are crafting a fully realized world, with very distinct characters, and riveting action.
Don’t miss the great letter sections at the end of the comics, where Mr. Rucka posts articles about current technological news items that could reflect possible advances in our own society as related to the future world that they have created. Very fascinating stuff!
Image Comics has recently released #17 of the series, and I will be along for the ride as long as the comic is produced, I hope for a very long time. I think this series would lend itself well for a television series or movie.
Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #44 (2014) has the NM of this comic at $3.00 cover price. I think that this book is way under-priced in Overstreet, and is a great investment and I will keep buying this book at cover price all day long, if and when I can find it. The longer the series goes on, the better the potential for investment. I think this story has long term potential.
Updated 07/21/2015: Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #45 (2015) NearMint is still cover price of $3.00. I haven’t seen one at cover price in a while. I personally would price this comic at about $10.00 for NearMint, at the minimum.
